QUADRENNIAL SHAVING PERFORMANCE / MADE IN USA
August 31, 1996
International Performance Festival
Cleveland, Ohio

The first shaving performance in Western Hemisphere was at the Cleveland International Performance Art Festival that usually ran in April. Irina Danilova was initially invited to make a Bus 59 trip performance (59 people on bus number 59 along Ohio Route 59 with speed 59 km/h). In the beginning of the year the curator of the festival, Thomas Mulready, announced that the festival was postponed to the end of August. The Quadrennial Shaving Performance just fit in and was welcomed along with Bus Trip 59. Someone in the performance audience mentioned the miracle of the date shift. Next year's festival was again held in April. The Shaving was organized as a scripted performance with a lottery among the audience that was afterwards invited for the first time to sign the newly shaved head. A friend from New York, Sue Muskat, made BRAID#3, and cut it off with Amy, a member of the audience who won the lottery.
